Starting from his boyhood joy of drawing favorite anime and game characters, his worldview has since expanded significantly. His artwork, comprising intricate and precise lines, showcases animals, landscapes, and creatures reminiscent of yokai and monsters, all joyously inhabiting the cityscapes he envisions. Drawing has connected him with others and serves as a source of energy to realize his dreams. His will to create will never cease.

JURY’S COMMENT

Emina Morioka

Art is (a kind of) journey. Art has the power to instantly take us to different worlds and dimensions without us having to move. Shu Toriyama is like an alchemist of painting who skillfully uses the power of art to convey his thoughts, individuality, emotions, and ideas to the hearts of viewers.
This work masterfully blends fictional worlds and realistic daily episodes into a single picture on a canvas, as if weaving a story. Although there seems to be a solid storyline throughout the painting, we can discover a new perspective each time we contemplate it. Despite its black-and-white color composition, it appears colorful and joyful. Toriyama’s works have a mysterious charm, allowing us to confront undiscovered lands and unknown aspects of ourselves. I'm eager to see where his coming works will take us after this artwork "Uganda (black)", and believe he will hopefully show us great artistic achievements.
