S. Proski, a blind/disabled artist, has developed blindness itself as the medium for vision. They focus on the floaters and distortions they perceive in their blind world, meticulously sewing or collaging individually cut pieces of canvas scraps by hand to create layered and tactile compositions. Using stitching and collage to construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct images—this material approach serves as a roundabout method to understand the visual world they are unable to comprehend, exploring painting haptically rather than optically. Through the process of recycling and remixing, they attempt to heal the wounds inflicted by ableism, assimilation, and their relationship with painting.

When I review the work at a judging screening, I feel an earnest desire to create a work like this. How do the works we admire come to be? I wish I could witness the creation process and ask the artist about their inspiration and what they were imagining. I genuinely enjoy this time to deepen my admiration for someone’s artwork, imagining the artist whom I have yet to meet.
