East Japan Railway Company Prize

The Connecting Landscapes

  • Year:

    2025

  • Size:

    300×360mm

  • Material/Technique:

    Colored pencil on sandpaper

A life-long creator, Rinako Ikuta has been drawing pictures and sewing doll dresses ever since she was a child. At the age of nine, she traveled across Eurasia with her family, an experience that has had a strong influence on her creative activities. In 2015, Ikuta was introduced to the clinical art technique of drawing with colored pencil onto a piece of sandpaper. Attracted by the rough feel and unique texture, she has come to use the method in her art since then, creating bright and intuitive hues guided by musical rhythms and her intensifying emotions. The awarded piece, “Connected Landscapes”, comprises ten pieces of 6 x 18cm painted sandpaper, and is influenced by images of her friends or by music.

JURY’S COMMENT

East Japan Railway Company

Each of the ten pictures drawn on sandpaper in Rinako Ikuta’s splendid “The Connecting Landscapes” reveals a distinctive image, while still creating an overall sense of harmony when viewed together. The piece corresponds with our commitment to connect people, regions, generations, industries, and information, aiming to support enriched lives for all. Furthermore, in an internal employee vote conducted prior to the final selection, this piece resonated most strongly with our group’s members. For this reason, we are honored to present the work with the East Japan Railway Company Prize. We hope that many people will feel this excitement and see the future possibilities stemming from this sense of unity.
