At the age of nineteen, Mika Kamijo was admitted to hospital after being diagnosed with a rare disease that has only been reported in five patients globally. Despite being bedridden, she stayed resilient and started learning to paint by herself. Most of Kamijo’s works that she made during her twenty-eight-year artistic career are centered around her fantastic dreams in which mysterious human figures, planets, insects, fungi and animals fascinate her in a colorful illusionary world. As she spends most of her time in her tiny room, imagination is where she finds her true freedom and a moment to lose herself in painting. Guided by her belief that “to live is to draw; to draw is to live”, Kamijo dreams of delivering her art to people around the world.
JINS Inc.
We were unanimously drawn to Ms. Kamijo's artwork for its beauty and delicacy of color. Her philosophy that "drawing is living" reflects a determination to enrich life despite facing a challenging illness, resonating closely with JINS' corporate vision. With strong conviction, we have selected her for this prize.
