Mami Yoshikawa’s creative endeavors are an extension of the joy she finds in eating and talking. The motifs in her work are derived from chats with staff about the places she wants to visit, and treats she would like to try on her days off, and she brings them to life with one thoughtful brushstroke at a time. Yoshikawa’s creative pace is unique; she works on multiple pieces at a time, and occasionally leaves work unfinished for years. This piece took six years to complete. Wrinkles and stains that appear on the surface over time become part of the art. She uses ballpoint pens and pencils for drawing, and carefully applies colors with Copic Markers. Color selection is intuitive and she often chooses a color that seems unrelated to the motif. However, as she adds to the work little by little, layers of color and time emerge, creating a depth that is intriguing.
