Suffering from social anxiety and self-denial since childhood, isousin had always felt a vague hopelessness in life. However, after taking up photography, he began to learn to accept himself and gradually became interested in art as a medium of free expression. One evening, he found a child’s scribbled picture left behind at a quiet park. Standing alone in the playground, his gaze set on the picture , and he slowly reached out to capture it with his smartphone. The photograph of the scribbled picture became the idea behind the awarded work in which he attempted to use a camera and photo-editing software to elevate the image to abstract art. The composite image, made with his other photographs of grounds and walls, reveals a distinct, yet elusive shape.

JURY’S COMMENT

Hiromi Kurosawa

People of the 21st century collect fragments of the world through the mechanical eye of the camera, but what is captured depends entirely on the choice of the person pressing the shutter. This is why photography is known as “the intersection of reality and creativity.” isousin is particularly interested in the patterns seen on buildings and roads in the city, and he captures these patterns and layers them with other images he has taken. The abstract image created by this layering process makes the subjects stand out, almost as if they are emerging from the paper. The idea came to him after seeing children scribbling on the ground, and it is remarkable that he came up with the technique of overlaying images from that observation. The size of the work also enhances its impact, making the piece itself looks like a fragment of a puzzle that forms the city. This work is unique and has a strong presence.
