A Pod of Whales

When Daisuke Shibuta was in his first year of senior high school, his homeroom teacher discovered his outstanding drawing ability, despite his struggle with verbal communication. Through communication with the teacher via drawings, the act of drawing itself has become a safe place for him, providing him with a space for expression while bringing inner peace. One day at home, Shibuta was going through a period of insecurity when he declared out loud that he was “determined to draw!” Since then, he began to immerse himself in his creative endeavors. In all his works, Shibuta fills the frame with various animals found on the land and in the water or air. Intensely drawn with oil-based colored pencils, his creatures expose free and bold forms, and while they are distinctively represented in bright hues, they harmonize peacefully with each other to achieve co-existence.

JURY’S COMMENT

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION

We were attracted to the uplifting brightness and energy exuded by Shibuta’s work and which would make the viewers smile. In addition, while the various whales are depicted with rich colors, they also harmonize, but without losing their individuality. This characteristic could also be regarded as a hint to realize our goal of “Producing Happiness for All”, which led to our selection of this piece.
