Since she was a little girl, with a strong interest in wild creatures and numerics, Uchizono has been drawing animals as her daily practice. Her inspiration is driven by her memories and the wealth of knowledge she has accumulated through reading encyclopedias and visiting zoos and aquariums. Uchizono even perceives numbers as colors and shapes, and finds joy in discovering birth dates, anniversaries, or wordplays within the infinite pi sequence. Whenever she sees a landscape or a trace of nature, she also sees numbers—a sensation that breathes life into her art. “I am not good at telling stories, so I tell them instead through drawing”, says Uchizono, who vividly depicts her inner world using hues and figures.
Sangetsu Corporation
The painting is appealing with its bold composition filled with detailed expressions that stimulate the viewer’s imagination and invite different interpretations. Together with the mysterious title, the depth of color, playful numbers and captivating eye of the rhinoceros stir our curiosity and invite us to engage in new dialogue and communication. The message that this artwork sends shows an affinity with our group’s aspiration to create an ”inclusive, sustainable, and enjoyable” society through the creation of space, and therefore we believe it deserves the sangetsu Prize.
