The artist Aot joined Yamanami Kobo in 2024 and started creating artworks. Usually, he doesn’t have a fixed theme and just lets his hand move freely. One can ask about his theme, but he’d merely answer there is nothing specific other than being mindful of not drawing something similar to his previous works. The artist enthusiastically explores his own style, drawing with different materials and on varying scales. Aot describes making the artwork as “trying to fill the paper with lines.” He draws intuitively, appreciating each moment, yet his process comprises a set of rules that are uniquely his.

JURY’S COMMENT

Hiromi Kurosawa

Geometric and detailed patterns are supported by silent, yet powerful energy, heading towards some kind of harmony. Abandoning absolute order, the artwork continues to produce random, unrestricted lines and figures. As we follow the trajectory of the pen, we see urban spaces that extend in multiple directions in accordance with the movement, the length, or the color of the pen. The organic forms delicately proliferate, emerging as architectural depth and layers, and transforming into a landscape. This is not a mere accumulation of fragmented pieces but is created by an integrated episode made by the artist’s body, giving it the sense of a cosmic universe. In this artwork, the inseparability of the segments and the whole picture somehow naturally exist, invoking a strong curiosity about the artist’s experience of the world, how he uses his body to determine the color and shape and their layout, and his creative process.
